Why Art?

Art inspires new ideas.  Art is not just paper with mediums for visual enjoyment, but an opportunity to create innovative ideas that will help others, create a better world, an easier way of doing things with cost saving benefits.  Creative minds find solutions to many of the problems we face.

Art allows creative problem solving.  Since students are learning new techniques, learning to control different mediums, and learning to manipulate the viewers thought, there are always many unexpected challenges to solve.

Art promotes critical and divergent thinking.  In the academic classrooms the students must follow a prescribed set of procedures in order to obtain the one and only correct response.  In art; there is always more than one answer, so the students must experiment, observe and reflect on what they are trying to relate to the viewer.

Art Provides a gateway to learning.  The lessons I incorporate, cross the curriculum as frequently as possible.  Whether it be science; learning about clay, figure drawing/skeletal and muscle structures, animal drawings in natural habitat, as well as influences of light on color.  In social studies; through exploring cultural and historical expressions of past, and present art periods in relationship to historical events of the same time.  In math; using geometric imagery such as in mosaics, twenty sided balls (icosohedron), optical patterns as in M.C. Escher's works, one and two point perspective.  In reading and language; by creating books, book markers, name monsters, cutting block lettering, and more.  Other areas covered are traffic safety, agricultural farming, electrical safety, the process and  the significance of printing.

Art Enhances self-esteem.  I strive to maintain an atmosphere where students learn in an environment, which encourages creativity and recognizes the importance  of each individual's personal expression.  Students are accepted at whatever their proficiency level may be, and are encouraged to grow and develop their skill levels.

Art generates joy throughout the community.  Students are encouraged to draw and be creative outside the classroom to brighten the world around them.  Some of the classroom projects we create outside the classroom include decorating the school for our annual carnival, signs have been painted for the baseball field, and ceiling tiles are painted annually by our seventh grade class.

All mediums are made available to students to encourage experimentation, growth and development.  Just as in other subjects, we must first learn from the past, develop skill in the present, then create better for the future.

Fowler Public School has a comprehensive grades 1-12 Art Curriculum.  Students are encouraged to analyze problems, be creative, while developing fine motor coordination,  and technical skills.
